Jôf di Montasio
2,754 metres, the roof of the Julian Alps on the Italian side: the summit our most alpine races run around.
01 The roof of the Julian Alps
Jôf di Montasio is the highest peak of the Julian Alps on the Italian side: 2,754 metres towering over Val Dogna and Val Saisera. It isn't a backdrop: it's the reference point our most technical races move around, the ones that demand real experience on alpine terrain.
02 Alpine races, fast races
Alpe Adria Ultra 120, Jôf Trail 31 and the first part of Montasio 55 are alpine races: they demand real experience on alpine, exposed terrain. Lussari 24 and Oitzinger 12 remain fast, non-alpine races, accessible to a wider audience while still taking place in genuine natural terrain. It isn't a hierarchy of value: it's a choice of terrain, declared upfront.
03 The Ultra's route around the Jôf
Alpe Adria Ultra 120 climbs from Malga Rauna, descends to Malborghetto and nears the Austrian border, then climbs back up towards Rifugio Circiule and Al Forcello, running for a stretch along the border ridge before descending into Val Aupa — the first life base, at km 54.1. From here it enters the Prealpi Giulie Regional Nature Park, a wild alpine area with steep climbs and scree, all the way to the second life base at Dogna, km 86.7. From Dogna the race follows the Jôf Trail course to Kile Alpine Resort, passing San Leopoldo, Chiut and Montasio.
«Ultra, Jôf and Montasio demand real experience on alpine terrain: it isn't a warning, it's respect for the mountain you're about to cross.»
04 The gear for the alpine races
On Jôf Trail 31 and Montasio 55: food and water for 6 hours of self-sufficiency, thermal blanket, charged phone, long trousers, long-sleeve top, personal cup, waterproof jacket rated 15,000 mmH2O. On Alpe Adria Ultra 120, in addition: head torch and spare batteries.
05 The races that circle the Jôf
Alpe Adria Ultra 120 — the queen race, 118.15 km and 8,730 m D+, an alpine race.
Montasio 55 — first part on the Jôf, technical and alpine, second part on Monte Santo Lussari.
Jôf Trail 31 — starts from Dogna, first stretch alpine and very demanding, then progressively faster all the way to Kile.
